Refresh Devotional Day 20 — The Noisy Multitude
Mar 20, 2021
“In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.”
Psalm 94:19 NKJV
These words remind us of two realities.
The first is the noisy crowd of anxieties that often swarm the soul. Thoughts of what needs to be done crowd in with worries about what has been done.
Add to this the false accusations of the evil one and the nasty opinions of others, and you get a noisy crowd within. This crowd is not easily silenced. It shouts its confusing message into our inner ears, deafening us to the voice of God and disquieting our souls.
As the crowd forced the hand of Pilate to crucify Christ with its relentless cries of, “Crucify him, crucify him!” so too our minds force away the peace of God with shouts of, “You must worry, you must worry!”
The anxiety crowd is a noisy bunch.
How can this noisy crowd be silenced? With the second reality, the comforts of God. How powerful are the comforts of God? They can turn a noisy riot into a place of delight. The noisy crowd of anxieties is powerless against the comforts God has in his arsenal of truth.
Just look a minute at a few of the weapons in God’s array of truth as noted in this psalm.
- “But the Lord has been my defense” (Ps 94:22) tells us the attacks of people may be vicious, but the Lord is our protector.
- “Oh Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs” (vs. 1) tells us the attacks of people may be malicious, but they will not go unpunished.
- “Shall the throne of iniquity …have fellowship with you?” (vs. 20) Tells us the evil-doing crowd may seem to win the day, but they will never have what is most precious to the human soul—intimacy with God. Not only do they not have it, but they cannot take it away.
These are but a few weapons in God’s arsenal of comforts. Take time to reflect on them, and you will find the noisy crowd being silenced in your delighted soul.
Prayer starter: Lord, shoot the arrows of truth from your Word deep into my heart so my soul will know your comfort.
